Our thanks to Joni Mae Makuakane-Jarrell, education specialist at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and Terry Reveira from UH-Hilo for helping Kalaekilohana continue its mission of creating a cultural destination for the teaching of the Hawaiian cultural arts. Learning to weave lauhala is a popular way for island residents to get involved with traditional Hawaiian Arts. One of Hawai`i's Living Treasures, Aunty Gladys Grace along with teachers she has taught, will be at Kalaekilohana to help beginning weavers learn to weave. This is a great chance for new weavers to make some things for the holidays. Christmas ornaments, simple gifts, and for weavers with some experience, lauhala purses.
