An Early Hike to Papakolea Green Sand Beach and Mahana Bay.....
.....is a favorite hike for many and Kalaekilohana is the place to stay to get there early. Time and time again, our guests have thanked us for suggesting they go early, before the crowds arrive from other parts of the island. We do not suggest driving the very rugged four wheel drive road to Papakolea. Although you will see others doing this, it's illegal to drive there without the proper permit. Instead, enjoy one of the most unique coastal hikes in Hawai`i. It's 2 1/2 miles each way and takes about an hour. Go early and experience the solitary splendor of Hawai`i Island's undeveloped southern coastline. At the beach, you'll find the geologically interesting green sands that continue to concentrate over time due to their weight. Remember to leave the sand where you found it so that others will be able to see it for years to come. Most of the year, the wind will be at your back for the trip home.
